50 free Photoshop Actions for Portraits

50 free Photoshop Actions: Portrait Pack

50 of the best portrait photo retouching actions…

We've created this exclusive portrait pack to enable you to give your shots a professional quality finish. You'll find an example shot of each Photoshop effect below. We've created most of the actions using re-editable Curves Adjustment Layers so you’ll be able see how the effect is achieved and be able to tweak the colours or tones to perfectly match your subject. Loading our Portait Action Pack could be easier – just follow these 3 steps:

Step 1 – Download the actions
Use the 'Download technique files' link at the top or bottom of the page to copy a zip file containing all 50 actions to your computer. The zip file contains one file: 'PhotoRadar 50 portrait actions.atn'.

Step 2 – Load into Photoshop
Open Photoshop and access the Actions dialogue window from the Window drop down menu. Go to the top right of the window and use the drop down menu to select Load Actions. Using the browser, select the .atn file from your computer and click Load. The actions will then appear as a set in your actions window. It really is as easy as that.

Step 3 – Have fun

To use a specific action, open the set, select the action you want to use and click the Play icon at the bottom of the window. Some actions pay pause and promt you to make a choice or selection (such as with the vingette actions). You can also fine-tune the effects by looking at the Curves Adjustment Layer and adjusting the RGB colour channels.

Can these actions also be used in Photoshop Elements 7? they sound fantastic marjan

As far as I know - "Actions" are only a feature of the full versions of Photoshop - they certainly will not work with Elements 5 - whether this is different for Elements 7 - I can't say for certain - but I suspect not - after all Adobe are not going to give away - all of Photoshop's features at the knockdown price of their Elements package - are they.

But for those interested in portrait work and are able to use these actions - they should provide useful additions to their post edit work.

PS - just experimented with these actions (using CS3) - on landscapes and various other genres - they work a treat and give some really interesting effects - a worthy download to tryout - thank you Photoradar - pity other parts of this fine site are still in desparate need of improvement - but this download should prove to be a great addition to your software - I urge you all to try it out - well those with Adobe Photoshop full versions at least.

Hi there,

I'm glad you like the actions. There is a way to get actions to work on Elements, however, most of these actions are curve based so they will not work. Sorry. I'll work on a set of Elements based actions too. Watch this space. Ben

Hi, I'm having a few problems running these in CS2. Seems to have issues with a "Make" command line.

Hi Psy43, Can you tell me which action you're getting this message on and I'll look into it this morning. Thanks, Ben

Gal

Actions are awesome, but has anybody else had a problme using action 21? Seems to turn my images a very funny colour with a vibrance adjustment layer and then nothing else. Certainly not celebrity glow!

Hi Gal, I don't seem to have that problem when I run it on my work or home computer. But, on my work computer I do get this message: "The command "Make" is not currently available" which seems odd, however, pressing "continue" seems to sort it out. I'll investigate further. Can you tell me what version of Photoshop you're using? Thanks, Ben

Gal

Hi Ben, I am using CS4. Have tried it out on some other images and they are better but still not what I was expecting. If no one else is having an issues then it must be at my end, I do get a similar error message half way through the action though.

I will persevere!

Keep up the good work though, the site is an excellent resource.

Hi Ben, sorry its taken a while to get back.

The problem seems to be with several of the actions - with one of the commands to make a new adjustment layer. It seems that whatever the specific layer is CS2 doesn't recognise it. You can continue the action as you say but I think it just misses out the command its missing.

The first command on the 'solarise' action is showing as 'adjustmant layer - type unknown' also the 2nd 'make adjustment layer' command on 'bleach bypass 01' - again type unknown and the 1st 'make adjustment layer' command on 'lith film'

also the same with some of the adjustment layer commands in actions 10, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 24, 25, 26, 28, 31, 32, 34, 35, 37, 38, 41, 42, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48 and 49

i can give more specifics if it helps? cheers Simon

I also seem to be having a problem with the 'convert to duotone' command in actions 12-15, although it seems to show all of the information for that command and just says its 'not currently available'...

Back to the earlier question, Elements (all versions except 1) CAN use Actions, but not in sets. Actions are, of course, all written in full PS and the writer needs to be aware of features that match in both programs. Actions can use Curves even for Elements, because Curves are in Elements - but hidden. Actions for most versions of Elements don't actually 'need' but benefit from the addition of thumbnail files - PSD for versions up to 5, PNG for versions 6 and later. They are cross-platform (i.e. they will work in both PC and Mac).

Antwest - click on the link to download the zip file, it's definitely there (it's a small file, and our system currently displays downloads lower than 1MB as 0MB - this will change...)

Thanks

Anybody have any more thoughts as to why these aren't working properly (see above)?

#20. Posted on Wednesday, 05 May 2010 at 07:33pm GMT. Report this

Back to the possible use of these Actions in Elements...... As they are in 'Sets', Elements doesn't handle them in the same way. However, if the atn file is installed properly in Elements (in the "photo effects" folder), it will show up on the Effects Palette. From there, if it's run on an image you get the warnings that the commands "Make" and "Set" are not currently available. But you still get the B&W control panel, with sliders for RGB, CMY - a little like the Hue/Saturation Adjustment box. Therefore, the world's your lobster as to which settings you might like and, after a bit of experimentation, you can choose to save, and later reload, the settings you like as Presets.

Saying Elements does not run on PSE5 is probably true, though - Elements 5 has always handled things quite differently to the other versions (maybe they farmed out the development to a totally different team) and even Actions that happily work in Elements 6 and later have trouble in version 5.
