Updated functions in Apple's photo editing software include Faces, Places and Brushes - and it's iPhone friendly too…

Aperture 3 is designed to make organising your photos easier than ever. New tools include Brushes for painting image adjustments onto parts of your photos, Adjustment Presets for applying professional photo effects and stunning new slideshows let you share your work by weaving together photos, audio, text and HD video. Locations can be assigned to your photos by using location information from GPS enabled cameras, tracking devices or your iPhone photos.

Stylish compacts added to Canon's range of digital cameras

Two slim and colourful Canon IXUS compacts have been added to Canon's range. The IXUS 130 is the slimmest model to date, measuring just 17.8mm at its thickest point and features a 14.1 Megapixel sensor, HD video in 720p resolution and HDMI capability. The IXUS 105 meanwhile includes a 12.1 Megapixel sensor and a bright, 6.8cm PureColor LCD II screen.

Nikon targets professional landscape photographers and photojournalists with its new ultra-fast prime lens for FX-format D-SLRs.

Nikon's new AF-S Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G ED costs just under £2000, but if you want the shallow depth of field that f/1.4 brings, and the premium image quality that's promised from the ED glass, aspherical elements and nine-bladed aperture, you're going to have to be prepared to pay a premium. Nikon launches world's first vibration reduction ultra-wide angle zoom lens for full-frame cameras

Nikon is launching a new stabilized wide angle zoom lens for its FX-format D-SLRs. The AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR provides up to four stops of vibration reduction, making it a great carry-around lens for lighter FX bodies, such as the D700. EOS 60D rumours unfounded as Canon announces the £799.99 EOS 550D. Features include 18MP, DIGIC 4 and 1080p Full HD movie mode.

After weeks of rumours, Canon has announced the 550D sitting at the top end of beginner digital SLR range somewhere between the EOS 500D and EOS 50D. Sharing features of both the 500D and the 7D, the 550 includes an improved sensor design, ISO 100-6400 (expandable to 12800) and a 3:2 clear view LCD screen.
