Photographer of the Year 2009 Winners: Man-made
Winning photos
Man-made
What the judges were looking for
Look for photographic opportunities that highlight aspects of our world that have been shaped by the hand of man. Whether you bring ordinary city locations to life through innovative photo technique, capture the essence of an industrial landscape or simply shoot planes, trains and automobiles, get creative and go beyond mere record shots to capture something of the man-made 'spirit'.

Winner
Gas Station - Bart Heirweg, Belgium
"When driving through the desolate landscape of Mývatn in Iceland, I encountered this abandoned gas station. For me, it showed Iceland's true colours, as the commercial and pollutant subject is clearly affected by the force of the natural world, exemplified by the strong sky above."
Canon EOS 5D with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens at 28mm; ISO 400; 1/25 sec at f/16

2nd Place
Playing with Shadows - Jos Zwart, The Netherlands
"I took this picture in Maastricht. The sun was shining. I looked around and saw a house with a spiral staircase. The whole staircase was in shadow."
Nikon D200 with Nikkor AF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 lens at 120mm; ISO 100; 1/320 sec at f/9

3rd Place
Mind Drive - Alper Çukur, Turkey
"This shot was taken in Kocaeli, Turkey. I tried to make a thought-provoking composition using the foreground interest, pier, sea, hills and the cloud formation."
Nikon D60 with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC lens at 10mm; ISO 100; 104 secs at f/8; ND1000x filter
