A moment is evaluated by the photographer's emotions, which leads to the decision of saving it on a photograph. So, to the photographer, that composition is the best.. The way I understand contests is they are evaluated based on technical merits, and if you were from this part of the world, who you know is a HUGE rating factor.

For that, I've chosen never to participate in photography contests.. +30 years ago..

Why would you define a contest to be a benchmark? Isn't self gratification enough?

I thought the video was useful as it was rather enlightening to hear and see what the judges are thinking about when they see all the photos presented to them. During the video, there were certainly some photos that made me take a sharp intake of breath, so there were some winning shots there, in my opinion!

Thanks PhotoRadar. It's a great site.

Found the video interesting - seems to me there is no clear recipe for an award winning image. The most positive advice for me was to take stock of what's in front of you and experiment with different angles/different perspectives to make the same subject look different. The only thing I am really confused about is whether there is a pre-conception during editing that pictures will be 'doctured' extensively to achieve dreamy looks etc as I know that technically some of my pictures are quite good but they do lack that kind of surreal atmosphere which the judges seem to like. (I'm thinking mainly of landscapes/seascapes).

Nice tip from some of the best photographer around. It's really a big challenge to put infront the best you can produce and have it judged to be one of the best.

The genus Equus seems to be very popular. Especially hippotigris. Now where can I find a few of them . .
