Mass Photo Gathering, London, 23 January 2010

In this must-see video, we speak to photographers gathered in protest over the use of Section 44 of the Terrorism Act to stop photographers.

Saturday 23 January, 2010: supporters of the "I'm a Photographer, Not a Terrorist" campaign gather in Trafalgar Square, London, to protest against the use of Section 44 of the Terrorism Act. Police have been able to use the act to stop and search photographers taking photographs in public, something which is not a crime. Hear what some of the photographers at the demonstration have to say about photography and the law... (Shot by Daryl Higgins.)

Hey it's Max from theprintspace (we printed the 'Stop and Search' cards shown in that video). Great to see it went really well on Saturday, am sure there'll be more pushing of the idea to go so let us know if we can do anything to help :)

It looks like it went very well.
I think we should have one north of the border too, Glasgow or Edinburgh.

2 comments really, firstly I didn't know about this protest as I would have made the effort to be there, plus I am unsure on the law regarding Security Guards/Personel challenging you outside of their work place, i.e. can a security guard leave his/her work place to challenge you on a public footpath/road?????????????? especially if your not pointing the camera in their direction..........

Inkslinger@: I've been photographing a few protestest in London and I've not encounter such problem from the securities/guards yet. Most of the time they seem to ignore me when I point the camera at them. But I did get a few unpleasent responses from the bystanders though...just ignore them. :D

Inkslinger - they have no right to challenge you if you are in a public place. But be sure you are in fact in a public place. Some places you may think are public, aren't; e.g. Canary Wharf.
