Sigma buy Foveon

Lens and sensor companies combine, but is it a match made in heaven?

Camera and lens manufacturer Sigma has brought sensor company Foveon, whose sensors power its cameras.

Foveon’s technology, seen in Sigma’s entire digital camera range, uses three-layer image capture technology, detecting red, green and blue light at each pixel. Foveon say this gives sharper images with significantly reduced image artefacts, compared to competing image sensor technologies.

Sigma’s Paul Reynolds said: “Owning Foveon will allow us co-ordinate sensor and camera development, improving time-to-market and ensuring new features meet photographers’ needs.

Foveon’s X3 image sensor technology will be a cornerstone for Sigma’s DSLR camera models and we’ll continue to develop new and innovative sensors.”
