Nikon Coolpix P100: first 1080p HD camera from Nikon

New 10.3MP Coolpix bridge camera brings Full HD and 26x ED zoom to the Nikon range

The Nikon Coolpix range of compacts gets a feature-packed boost in the form of the Coolpix P100. A bridge camera with a wide-angle 26x zoom Nikkor lens with ED glass, it has much to offer photographers who want a more DSLR-like range of features from a compact camera, while retaining the convenience of a built-in lens.

Nikon Coolpix P100: A 1080p Full HD first for Nikon

The back-lit 10.3 megapixel CMOS sensor reportedly offer improved sensitivity and noise reduction, enabling crisp images to be taken in low-light conditions. Nikon has excelled with ISO performance in the D3S and some of the knowledge gained there is sure to filter across to other departments in the imaging division.

The Coolpix P100 is a significant camera for Nikon, in that it gets Full 1080p HD 30fps movie recording. It's an unusual choice of camera for bringing Full HD to the Nikon range, but we're not complaining. Stereo sound is captured via the built-in stereo mic, while a dedicated video record button and 3-inch (7.5cm) vari-angle LCD screen should ensure it's fast and easy to get the video clips you need.

The Nikon Coolpix P100 is available in black only from mid-March 2010. Expect a recommended price of £349.99 / €415.00
