Digital Camera Photographer of the Year commended photos

2009 highly commended and commended images revealed

The judges in 2009's Digital Camera Photographer of the Year competition have announced their selection of commended and highly commended entries. PhotoRadar is exclusively revealing them here...

The Weather I Love by Paolo De Faveri - Landscapes, Commended

If you've been following PhotoRadar's coverage of the Digital Camera Photographer of the Year competition, you'll know that more than 100,000 entries were received this year. You'll also most likely have browsed the final Editor's Choice Shortlist for the 10 categories. The judges have now reached their decision, and the category winners and overall winner will be revealed in December, with an exhibition of the best entries following at the Mall Galleries, London.

Here though, we're proud to reveal the commended and highly commended shots for each category. Click through the following links to discover the photos that have been judged to deserve extra recognition:

so if your image has not been put into the commended list does that mean it will not be in the exhibition?

:( To bad for me then :(

It's confusing. To my mind, the wording above suggests that these are the images that were "commended" or "highly commended" but which are NOT category winners or the overall winner. Who knows? We'll have to wait until December....

I hope you are right as there are images such as the chimp image that didnt go through and I thought it was brilliant,

the comended and hightly comended are not the 1st,2nd and 3rd.if you look at last years, there was upto 5 of the comended and highly comended, then there was the 1st 2nd and 3rd prizes.so there is still a chance for all those that didnt make comended or highly comended.
last years cat..... http://parconline.multiply.com/photos/hi-res/upload/SZIxIgoKCCwAACgIDkE1

My entry that was in the shortlist of Digital Vision contest. http://poty2009.dcmag.co.uk/3913562627849228701/picaso-peice.html
i would love to hear what people think of my entry.
Thank you.

Hmmm - no offence to the photographer but is the shot of two plastic chairs against some red brick really better than some of the other entries in that category?
I'd like to hear some editorial justification for that.

HMM, I'm confused:) My image is in Highly Commended is that mean that I have no chance for one of 3 prizes?
In e-mail which I recive thay says that "Your final placing will be revealed at a private view evening at the Mall Galleries on Tuesday 8 December" so if thay annouce placing on december so what's that?
so now I don't know what to think, any idea?

I had the same email, and yet find I have a commended image. While it is confusing, I think that's it for us, but I'm still looking forward to going along to the exhibition to see who gets the top three prizes in each category. Everyone who made it this far has still come an astounding way if you take into account just how many entrants there were this year!

Congrats to everyone who got this far!

If you look at the Planet Earth cat.there is only 2 highly comended and 1 comended.surly this would mean that one of them is a prize winner,if they are choosing from them.its only my opionion but i think the 1st,2nd and third will be picked from the rest of the comp.although ive looked at the highly comended and comended and there is some stunning photos.I would have been over the moon to ever get one of these rewards.good luck to everyone and the ones that have got this far.

I agree with this, sorry to whoever took it and congrats to getting selected, but really? I know I am not the best photographer in the world so it would be interesting to have some sort of explanation on each shot, especially this one.

Other than that, fantastic images in here, makes me realise how far I have to go to get anything looked at in this comp.

I actually liked the shot of the two chairs. Its a clever concept and shows a way of life - ie allotments, fences, small space etc... You also wonder who normally sits there? Photography doesnt always have to equal a breathtaking shot , sometimes a subtle idea can be just as powerful.

I would definitely have to disagree with you, karenoliver. I don't care for the shot of the two chairs at all. I'm still baffled at what the judges see in that photo, as compared to the others, that makes it worthy of a "commended" status. One of my photos is in the same "Man Made" group and made it into the Editors' Choice round. I'm hoping that the two chair photo being named as a commended image means that my image has made it into the top three of the category. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

So if you haven't recieved an email that means theres no chance of winning?
I was shortlisted but haven't received an email after that.

Hi
I'm also baffled about the thinking behind revealing the Commended and Highly Commended entries before the main event.
I'm Commended and will be going along but still can't make sense of it.
Either the Commended and Highly Commended entries won't be among the ultimate winners, which means the winners are lurking among the rest and could be a disincentive to turning up at the event (it's costing me a fair bit in train fares to get there)...
Or the winners will be drawn from among the Commended and Highly Commended entries but does that mean only Highly Commended are in with a chance?
Either way it seems unnecessary and confusing and I hope the organisers will rethink this practice next year.
The logical procedure would be to announce the names of those who are in the final line-up (exhibition) and leave it at that. Reveal all the winners and Commended and Highly Commended on the day.

fellstumbler I agree with you, is realy confusing.

I don't see the sens when in that announcment. Still I don't understand, is the choice of image will be from comended or rest or pictures. I don't understand also why I recive this invitation on e-mail where thay say that my final placing will be relavate on private evening 9th dec. becouse I have highly commended image , so my placing what I think is highly comended, not a winner, or mayby? heh, that's too complicated for me. I'm not going for a that evening becouse I live in Poland and London is too far and to expensive for me, but I want to wish you all good luck, and congratulations for winners:)

It all seems so wrong how they have done it.I dont know for sure but seeing the PLANET EARTH catagory and seeing that there is only 2 comended and one highlly comended, surly would mean that if the 1st,2nd and 3rd are chosen from these that the highly comended one has to get first prize!it just doesnt make sence.they should have explained it better, for such a big competition.
I never made it to the comended but would still have been overjoyed at such a place.just to have been shortlisted has made me have a constant smile on my face since being anounced.I dont hold much chance of being in the top three of my cat as there is so many that i feel are better than mine ,but I do wish everyone luck and hope that the new year brings you all happyness.

I have to totally agree too....the shot isn't anything inspirational particulalrly as the shot has flowers in it and the theme is ' MAN MADE '.....its as as bad a decision as to hire JOE BRAND to judge the Countryfile compettition
